TEHRAN (IQNA) – Hope is essential and is fuel for one to make efforts in life and the Quran and Islamic teachings strongly warn against losing hope, considering it a grave sin.

Losing hope

Despairing of God’s mercy and forgiveness is the opposite of having hope in Him. If one has a faulty belief in God and fails to recognize His infinite mercy and His limitless power, he may lose hope. Such a shortcoming in belief may lead one to Kufr (disbelief).

It can be said that only disbelievers may completely lose hope and that people of faith never lose hope.

When one has no hope of getting his worldly goals, he stops working and making efforts and his life becomes stalled.

The result would be sufferings and hardships that he undergoes and the difficulties and problems he inflicts on others.

The solution to it lies in changing one’s attitude. Undoubtedly, belief in God prevents losing hope in worldly affairs. It is also important that one must not lose hope in pursuing next-worldly objectives and rectify his relationship with God.

Losing hope in this area could have grave consequences in the Hereafter. So one should start to resolve it before it is too late. One way to do it is to reflect on God’s mercy and forgiveness.

God says in verse 53 of Surah Az-Zumar: “(Muhammad), tell my servants who have committed injustice to themselves, ‘Do not despair of the mercy of God. God certainly forgives all sins. He is All-forgiving and All-merciful.’”
